Withdrawn British Standards still being cited
A standard does not stop being quoted when it is withdrawn. It carries on appearing in specifications, merchant listings and renovation guidance for years, long after the document behind it has gone. Telling someone to build to a dead standard is worse than citing nothing at all, because it sounds authoritative and cannot be complied with.
This is the register we keep for our own notes, published because we could not find one anywhere else. It lists 226 withdrawn standards we have found cited as current in UK building content, and what to cite instead. Last checked 13 September 2026.

Nothing in the register matches that. This register is not a complete list of every withdrawn British Standard, so a number missing from it is not evidence that the standard is live. Check the BSI catalogue, which is the authority, and tell us if we should add it.

No direct replacement. Cite instead: BS EN 14967:2006 for the bitumen DPC product itself, BS 8215:1991 for design and installation, and BS 743:1970, which does remain current, for DPC materials generally
Bitumen damp proof course is not orphaned. The product standard is BS EN 14967:2006, which is what a manufacturer's declared performance for a bitumen DPC roll is written to, so ask for that rather than a BS 6398 reference. Design and lap the DPC to BS 8215:1991, which is what Approved Document C points at, and note BS 743:1970 for DPC materials generally does remain current.

Recent, and not yet reflected in most guidance. The single concrete standard was split into two parts in March 2026, so a specification written against BS EN 206:2013 needs rereading against the new part 1, and BS 8500 remains the UK document a homeowner's concrete is actually ordered through. Withdrawal is not prohibition. BSI's lead standards manager, quoted by the Concrete Society, has said the 2013+A2:2021 text can still be worked to in the UK until BS 8500 is revised, because BS 8500 is the complementary British Standard that gives effect to it here.

Edition change, not a withdrawal of the standard, but the title grew: the current part 2 covers classification tests and determination of geotechnical properties. A soil report that quotes plasticity index or shrinkage to the 1990 edition, which is common when deciding foundation depth near trees, is using a superseded method.

Edition change, not a withdrawal of the standard. Basement and cellar tanking guidance still quotes the 2009 edition and its Grade 1 to Grade 3 table. The 2022 edition keeps grades but reworks the water management, maintenance and warranty expectations, so a design justified on the 2009 text is out of date rather than wrong in principle.

Replace ties to DD 140 on a specification with a PD 6697:2019 Type number, the cavity width, and a requirement that the tie carries a declared performance to BS EN 845-1:2013+A1:2016. The Type 1 to 4 classification and the ties per square metre now live in PD 6697, under BS EN 1996-1-1.

The fire propagation index test. Class 0, which is a building regulations term rather than a standard class, was defined by combining a BS 476-6 index limit with a BS 476-7 Class 1 result, so Class 0 has no test behind it now that both parts are withdrawn.

BS 476-7withdrawn 4 March 2025Fire tests on building materials and structures. Method of test to determine the classification of the surface spread of flame of products
Cite instead: BS EN 13823, with classification to BS EN 13501-1
The source of the Class 1 surface spread of flame rating still printed on cladding, lining and insulation datasheets. BSI withdrew it in the same month that the 2025 amendments to Approved Document B removed the national reaction to fire classes from guidance in England. Reaction to fire is now a BS EN 13501-1 Euroclass, for example A2-s1,d0.

No British Standard covers this any more. In practice: No standard exists. Use the specific foam system's BBA certificate or European Technical Assessment and work to its conditions, with an installer under an approved scheme (CIGA guarantee, TrustMark), plus PAS 2030:2023 and PAS 2035:2023 where the job is funded retrofit. Approved Document C para 5.13d is still the regulatory hook, even though the two standards it names are dead.
This one really has no successor, and it is worth being precise about why: there is no European standard for urea formaldehyde foam cavity fill. The CEN work item never got past draft, BSI publishes no BS EN 15100, and it is absent from the designated standards list. Approved Document C still names BS 5618 at paragraph 5.13d. In practice a UF foam fill now rests on the system's BBA certificate, an approved installer scheme and PAS 2030:2023.

Its installation companion was BS 5618.

Pair it with a live product colour system (the manufacturer's own reference, RAL or NCS) for the paint itself.
The colours have not gone anywhere. BS 4800 was the paint subset of BS 5252:1976, which is still current, and every BS 4800 code such as 18 B 25 is a BS 5252 hue, greyness and weight reference that still resolves. What went in November 2024 is a British Standard fixing a range of paint colours: BS 5252 says in its own scope that it is not itself a range of colours. Specify against the framework plus a manufacturer's current system, and expect the old numbers on drawings for years yet.

There is genuinely no current British Standard code of practice for laying a laminate floor, and that gap is real - worth saying plainly rather than dressing it up. But the subject is not uncovered: BS EN 13329:2023 governs the product, BS EN 14041:2018 the marked essential characteristics, and BS 8203:2017 clause 6 the subfloor and floating-floor build-up, which is where nearly all laminate failures start. An asbestos surveyor cites the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (regulation 4, the duty to manage), HSE HSG264 'Asbestos: The survey guide' (2012, second edition) for the survey itself, HSE HSG248 'Asbestos: The Analysts' Guide' (second edition, May 2021, amended July 2021) for sampling and analysis, and ACOP L143 'Managing and working with asbestos'. Accreditation: ISO/IEC 17025 for the analysing laboratory, which CAR 2012 requires, and BS EN ISO/IEC 17020 for the surveying organisation, which HSE strongly recommends but does not require.
Genuinely dead and it should stay that way - it specified a product that cannot lawfully be supplied or installed, so no successor standard will ever exist. But a register entry saying only 'no successor' is useless to anyone holding a survey report that names BS 3536. The live chain is regulatory, not standards-based: CAR 2012 for the duty, HSG264 for the survey, HSG248 for the analysis, and UKAS accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 or BS EN ISO/IEC 17020 for whoever you hire.

Current as BS EN 1997-1:2004+A1:2013, the geotechnical code a foundation depth or an underpinning design is justified under. BS EN 1997-1:2024 and BS EN 1997-3:2025 are published, and BSI withdraws the UK adoptions of all first generation Eurocodes on 30 March 2028.

Current as BS 4449:2005+A3:2016, so reinforcement bar is still specified to it. Its companion fabric standard BS 4483 was withdrawn on 27 March 2025, so do not carry a BS 4449 citation across to mesh: mesh conformity now runs through BS EN 10080.

European Technical Approval Guidelines no longer exist as a separate route. Under the Construction Products Regulation they were used as European Assessment Documents and have now all been converted into EADs, except a short list that had fallen out of use and will only be converted if a manufacturer asks for an assessment on that basis. A product datasheet citing an ETAG number should be read against the EAD that replaced it.

The acronym ETA changed meaning. Before 1 July 2013 it stood for European Technical Approval, issued under the Construction Products Directive and time limited. After that date it means European Technical Assessment, issued under the Construction Products Regulation against a European Assessment Document and valid indefinitely. A resin anchor or a wall tie datasheet that still says Approval is quoting the old regime.

An unqualified BS 6262 is the 1982 code of practice, and BSI still records that as current. The restructured series was meant to replace it, and the parts say the 1982 code will only be withdrawn when all seven parts are published. Part 5 on glazing systems has never appeared, so the 1982 code stays alive and the citation is ambiguous. A bare BS EN 14179 does not name a part. Part 1, definition and description, is BS EN 14179-1:2016, which superseded the withdrawn 2005 edition. This is heat soaked toughened glass: the heat soak process reduces, but does not remove, the residual risk of spontaneous breakage from nickel sulphide inclusions, which is the reason for specifying it overhead or at height.

Current as BS 8605-1:2014. It is a method of specifying external timber cladding rather than a product standard, and it complements the harmonised BS EN 14915 and BS EN 13986. Useful for moisture content and performance criteria that the harmonised standards leave out for UK conditions.

Current as BS 8000-6:2023, which revised the 2013 edition to follow the changes in BS 5534:2014+A2:2018. The 1990 edition is withdrawn. This is the workmanship code for laying clay and concrete tiles, natural slate and fibre cement slate, so it sits alongside BS 5534 rather than replacing it.

The part suffix no longer exists. BS EN 13241-1:2003+A1:2011 became BS EN 13241:2003+A2:2016 when the standard was restructured, so a citation of BS EN 13241-1 is naming the old numbering. It covers powered gates and garage doors without fire resistance; fire resisting versions are BS EN 16034. This is the standard behind the CE or UKCA marking a powered driveway gate needs, and the force limitation requirements that make an automated gate safe.

Current as BS EN ISO 15927-3:2009. It calculates the driving rain index for a vertical surface from hourly wind and rain data, giving the airfield annual index and the spell index, with corrections for topography and sheltering. It is the calculation behind an exposure zone; BS 8104 is the UK code of practice that applies it.

Current as BS EN 14967:2006. It covers flexible bitumen sheets used as a damp proof course in a wall. It does not cover preformed cavity trays, copings or flashings, which is worth knowing because a DPC specification often has to name a separate product for those. The plastic and rubber equivalent for basement tanking is BS EN 13967, and bitumen damp proof sheets are BS EN 13969.

Current as BS EN 12326-2:2011. The companion to Part 1: Part 1 is the specification a roofing slate declares against, Part 2 is the test methods behind those declarations. A test report will name Part 2 while a declaration of performance names Part 1, and quoting Part 1 as though it were the test standard gets that the wrong way round. BSI does not expose a product page for Part 2 that can be linked directly, so the URL here is Part 1 of the same standard.

Current as BS EN 494:2012+A1:2015, the product specification and test methods for fibre-cement PROFILED sheets and fittings. But BSI has scheduled the fire resistance parts of BS 476, that is parts 8, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 31.1, for withdrawal on 2 September 2029, superseded by the BS EN 1363, BS EN 1365, BS EN 1366 and BS EN 1634 series. A fire door specified only as FD30 to BS 476-22 will need a BS EN 1634-1 and BS EN 13501-2 classification such as EI 30 or E 30 before then, and many manufacturers already quote both.

Current, but the live amendment changes every couple of years and citations lag. BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 was published on 15 April 2026 and BS 7671:2018+A2:2022+A3:2024 is withdrawn on 15 October 2026 after a six month transition. Quoting a regulation number against an old amendment is risky because numbering and requirements move between amendments; cite BS 7671 without a year, or check the amendment before quoting a specific regulation.

It sets the operational, testing and record keeping requirements for emergency escape lighting, which is what a converted flat block's common stair has to meet, and it is the standard BS 5266-1 applies in the UK. Cite BS EN 50172 without a year, or check the edition, because the 2004 text is two decades old.

BSI has been adding IEC to the designation of European standards of IEC origin as each document is reissued, so BS EN 60xxx becomes BS EN IEC 60xxx. The trap is that this happens per part, not per series, so a series can have both forms live at once. Switches are the clearest case: the general requirements part is still BS EN 60669-1:2018, while the particular requirements parts are now BS EN IEC 60669-2-1 and BS EN IEC 60669-2-4. Circuit breakers behave the same way, with BS EN 60898-1 for a.c. and BS EN IEC 60898-3 for d.c. Do not add or remove IEC by analogy; check the part you are citing.

The technical specification part, which is what a radiator output claim rests on, is BS EN 442-1:2014; it superseded the 1995 part 1 and absorbed the old part 3. Radiator outputs quoted in the UK are normally delta T 50 to this standard, and a figure quoted at delta T 60 or 70 is not comparable.

A bare BS 8524 does not name a part, and both parts were reissued in November 2025. Part 1, BS 8524-1:2025, is the product specification and part 2 the code of practice for application, installation and maintenance. The 2013 editions are withdrawn. A curtain certified to part 1 still has to be installed and maintained to part 2, which is the half that gets skipped.

A bare BS EN 1253 does not name a part, and the part editions have moved. BS EN 1253-1:2003 was withdrawn on 31 January 2015; the live parts are BS EN 1253-1:2015, trapped floor gullies with a water seal of at least 50 mm, and BS EN 1253-2:2015, roof drains and floor gullies without a trap. The 50 mm seal is the distinction that matters in a wet room, and gully tops and manhole tops are a different standard again, BS EN 124.

Half of it is gone. Part 1, the timber quality specification, was withdrawn in 1996 and replaced by BS EN 942. Parts 2 (workmanship) and 3 (wood trim and its fixing) are still live, so 'joinery to BS 1186' is ambiguous: name BS EN 942 for timber quality and BS 1186-2 or BS 1186-3 for the workmanship you actually mean.

A series that is only partly alive, and partly renamed. Parts 1 (excavation and filling), 10 (plastering and rendering), 13 (above ground drainage) and 14 (below ground drainage) have been withdrawn with no replacement part. Parts 3, 6 and 8 were reissued under a new series title, Workmanship on construction sites, with changed scopes. The rest, including Parts 2.1, 2.2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12, 15 and 16, are still live and in some cases unchanged since 1989. Cite the part and its year, not 'workmanship to BS 8000'.

The series has four parts, not five. Part 5 (terrazzo, natural stone and agglomerated stone flooring) was withdrawn on 30 May 2024 and its content moved into BS 5385-3:2024. Current parts are BS 5385-1:2018, BS 5385-2:2015, BS 5385-3:2024 and BS 5385-4:2015.

Current, but the live edition is BS 8203:2017. The 2001 edition, including BS 8203:2001+A1:2009, was withdrawn on 30 March 2017 and is the one most older flooring specifications and subfloor moisture guidance quote.

Current, but the live edition is BS 5325:2021. The 2001 edition was withdrawn on 29 July 2021, so carpet and textile flooring specifications written before then name a dead edition.

Numbering that no longer matches the series title. Part 1 was retitled from Stairs, ladders and walkways to just Stairs in 2010, and Part 3, which covered industrial type stairs and permanent ladders, was withdrawn in 2015 with no BS 5395 replacement. Live parts are BS 5395-1:2010 (straight flights and winders), BS 5395-2:1984 (helical and spiral stairs) and BS 5395-4:2011 (stairs for limited access, the alternating tread and space saver part). Note that Part 2 has not been revised since 1984.

The whole series is gone, not just one part. Laboratory measurement moved to BS EN ISO 10140 in 2011 and field measurement to BS EN ISO 16283 between 2014 and 2016. Any product data sheet, party wall report or sound test certificate still quoting a BS EN ISO 140 part is quoting a withdrawn test method. The live references are BS EN ISO 10140-2 and 10140-3 for laboratory work and BS EN ISO 16283-1, 16283-2 and 16283-3 for site testing.

Nine parts became four. Parts 4, 5, 6 and 7 were withdrawn on 29 March 2022 and merged into an enlarged BS 1377-2:2022, and Part 8 left the series in 2018 for BS EN ISO 17892-9. What survives is BS 1377-1:2016, BS 1377-2:2022, BS 1377-3:2018+A1:2021 and BS 1377-9:2025. A ground investigation quote or soakaway test method that names Part 4, 5, 6 or 7 is naming a part that no longer exists.

Still current, and often confused with BS 4800, which is not. BS 5252:1976 is the colour framework, the underlying 12 hue by greyness by weight system. BS 4800, the schedule of paint colours that gave the familiar references such as 00 E 53, was withdrawn on 5 November 2024. So the framework survives while the paint schedule built on it does not: name a specific colour by its RAL or NCS reference or by the manufacturer's own name rather than by a BS 4800 code.

Current, but frequently cited as if it set a legal limit. It is guidance on internal ambient noise levels for a building's occupants, mainly used to support planning noise assessments. It is not the route to Building Regulations sound insulation compliance in England and Wales: that is Approved Document E, met either by pre-completion testing to BS EN ISO 16283 or by using a Robust Details construction. Robust Details is a scheme, not a standard, and it does not appear in the BSI catalogue at all.

Two thirds withdrawn. Parts 1 (stone and brick masonry) and 2 (concrete) were withdrawn on 15 April 2000 and replaced by BS 8221-1 and BS 8221-2, but Part 3, cleaning of metals, was never withdrawn and remains current as BS 6270-3:1991. So BS 6270 is neither wholly dead nor safe to cite as a whole.

Current, and unusually old: BS 5395-2:1984, still the code of practice for helical and spiral stairs. It covers stairs circular on plan only. A loft conversion staircase that is not circular on plan is governed by Approved Document K and BS 5395-1, not by this part.

The live document is PAS 2035/2030:2023, which combines what used to be two separate publications. Cite it as PAS 2035/2030:2023 rather than as PAS 2030 or PAS 2035 alone: the standalone PAS 2030:2023 was withdrawn on 29 August 2024 and PAS 2030:2019 before it.

Current as BS EN ISO 717-1:2020, reviewed and confirmed in 2026. The 1997 edition is withdrawn. This is where the Rw single number airborne sound rating comes from; part 2 is the impact sound rating Lnw.

Current as BS EN 12004-1:2017. It replaced BS EN 12004:2007+A1:2012, which is withdrawn, and the number gained a part suffix in the process, so a bare BS EN 12004 citation is naming the superseded undivided standard. This is where the C2, S1, TE adhesive class letters come from. It sets no design or installation rules: those are in BS 5385.

Current as BS EN ISO 717-2:2020, which superseded the withdrawn 2013 edition. This is the impact sound rating, Lnw, the counterpart to part 1's airborne Rw. Approved Document E sets the values a separating floor has to reach; this standard only says how the single number is derived.

Current as BS 4787-1:1980, and one of the oldest live standards in the corpus. It gives the coordinating and work sizes for wood doorsets, which is where the familiar 762 x 1981 and 838 x 1981 imperial derived door leaf sizes come from. Fire doorsets are a separate matter, governed by BS 476-22 or BS EN 1634-1 testing.

A bare BS 4787 means part 1, BS 4787-1:1980, which is the only part in general use and is still current. Cite the part.

A bare BS 6222 does not name a part. Part 2, the strength and durability of fitted kitchen units, island units and breakfast bars, is BS 6222-2:2009+A1:2017 and is current. Part 3 covers surface finish durability. Note the scope limit: BS 6222 is about strength and durability, not safety. Safety of kitchen storage units and worktops is BS EN 14749.

Current as BS 8417:2024, which replaced BS 8417:2011+A1:2014. The 2024 revision is not cosmetic for domestic work: it upgraded softwood deck beams, wall plates and joists from use class UC3 to UC4, the same level as posts in ground contact. A specification written to the 2011 edition will under treat those members.

Current as BS 5489-1:2020, which superseded the 2013 edition and added guidance for smart city environments and EV charging points. It covers roads and public amenity areas, not vehicular tunnels, and it is a design code for adopted highway lighting rather than anything that governs a domestic security light on a house wall.

Current as BS EN 15570:2008, but check it is the standard you mean: it covers the strength and durability of furniture hinges pivoting on a vertical axis, that is cabinet door hinges, not storage units themselves. Safety requirements for domestic and kitchen storage units and worktops are BS EN 14749:2016+A1:2022, and strength and durability of storage furniture is BS EN 16122.

A bare BS EN 1176 does not name a part. Part 1, general safety requirements, is BS EN 1176-1:2017+A1:2023; the 2008 edition is superseded. It applies to permanently installed public playground equipment, so it is the wrong reference for a private garden feature, though its impact attenuation and entrapment principles are what a pond or water feature safety discussion is drawing on.

Superseded. BS EN 1794-1:2018 has been replaced by BS EN 1794-1:2024, and the 2011 and 2003 editions before it are withdrawn. It is also a road traffic standard: it sets mechanical and stability performance for noise reducing devices beside a highway, which is not the same thing as an acoustic fence in a garden. The acoustic performance parts are BS EN 1793.

Current, with the live base document ISO 9229:2020, the third edition, replacing the 2007 edition. It is a vocabulary standard only: it defines the terms used across thermal insulation materials, products and applications and sets no performance requirement, so it cannot be cited as a requirement for anything.
Scope, method and limits
This register covers the standards that turn up in our own notes on UK domestic renovation: structure, masonry, timber, roofing, drainage, glazing, fire and finishes. It is not a complete list of every withdrawn British Standard, and it is not a substitute for the BSI catalogue, which is the authority on the status of any standard.
Every entry was checked against the publisher's own catalogue entry on the date shown. The register is read automatically by a checker that runs over our library each night, so an entry added here is enforced across every note we publish rather than sitting in a document.
