Manufacturer data sheet for the 4 kW QUHZ-W40VA Ecodan CO2 (R744) monobloc paired with the EHPT20Q-VM2EA thermal store. SCOP is 2.90 with an ErP rating of A for the large tapping profile and a water heating efficiency of 129 per cent. Heating capacity is 4.32 kW with a power input of 2.18 kW and a COP of 3.00, measured at an outdoor temperature of -3C dry bulb and -4C wet bulb with an outlet water temperature of 55C and inlet 47C, which is a high flow temperature and explains the modest SCOP. Outdoor unit sound pressure at 1m is 43 dBA and sound power 53 dBA tested to BS EN 12102; the indoor thermal store is 30 dBA and 40 dBA. Operating ambient range is -15 to +35C. Water pipework is 15mm with a flow rate of 3 to 8 l/min and a minimum flow of 1.3 l/min. The thermal store holds 200 litres nominal, runs DHW at 40-70C and space heating at 25-60C, has an 18 litre primary expansion vessel charged to 1 bar, two 3 bar pressure relief valves and an 85C manual reset thermostat. Store dimensions are 1600mm high by 595mm wide by 680mm deep, weighing 77 kg empty and 283 kg full, which is the figure that decides whether an upstairs floor needs checking. Supply is 220-240V single phase 50Hz.

Mitsubishi Electric
Manufacturer page for the R290 propane Ecodan monobloc. Rated A+++ for heating efficiency at a 35C flow temperature, on the A+++ to D scale, and capable of flow temperatures up to 75C. The R290 refrigerant has a global warming potential of 0.02 as stated by the manufacturer. The 75C capability is the specification that decides whether existing radiators sized for a gas boiler can be reused rather than replaced.

NIBE
Manufacturer specification for the F2040 range in four sizes. SCOP to EN 14825 in average climate is 4.8, 4.4, 4.4 and 4.5 at a 35C supply and 3.5, 3.3, 3.4 and 3.4 at 55C. In cold climate the same units give 3.7, 3.6, 3.6 and 3.7 at 35C and 3.0, 2.8, 2.9 and 2.9 at 55C. Pdesignh in average climate is 4.8, 8.2, 11.5 and 14.5 kW at 35C and 5.3, 7.0, 10.0 and 14.0 kW at 55C, which is the sizing figure a heat loss calculation is matched against. Efficiency class on the package label is A+++ at 35C and A++ at 55C, and hot water class is A on the XL and XXL tapping profiles. The heat pump works down to an outdoor temperature of -20C while still supplying up to 58C flow. The consistent pattern across the table, roughly a quarter of the efficiency lost between 35C and 55C, is the reason emitter sizing matters more than unit choice.

NIBE
Manufacturer specification for the NIBE S2125-8 and S2125-12. SCOP to EN 14825 in average climate is 5.00 at 35C and 3.70 or 3.80 at 55C; in cold climate it is 4.10 or 4.20 at 35C and 3.20 or 3.40 at 55C. Pdesignh in average climate is 5.33 kW at 35C and 5.30 kW at 55C for the -8, and 6.80 and 7.60 kW for the -12. Nominal heat capacity and COP at 7/35 to EN 14511 is 3.15 kW / 5.18 for the -8 and 3.67 kW / 5.21 for the -12. Product and system efficiency class at 35/55C is A+++ and hot water class is A on the XL tapping profile. Sound power (LWA) to EN 12102 at 7/45 is 49 dB(A). Working range reaches a 75C supply temperature, and it still delivers up to 65C at an outdoor temperature of -25C, which is the answer to the claim that heat pumps stop working in cold weather. Unit dimensions are 1070mm high by 1130mm wide by 820mm deep.

Nu-Heat
Manufacturer data on retrofit underfloor heating. Nu-Heat states its LoPro low profile overlay range has a height build-up as low as 15mm, laid over an existing solid or timber floor with tiles or laminate applied directly on top, which is the figure that decides whether doors and skirtings have to be altered. The manufacturer claims underfloor heating efficiency is around 25 per cent better than radiators, rising to up to 40 per cent more efficient when paired with a heat pump, because a larger emitting surface allows a far lower flow temperature. Nu-Heat cites over 80,000 installations across more than 34 years.

Sentinel Performance Solutions
REACH safety data sheet for one of the two market-leading UK central heating inhibitors, useful because it shows what a domestic corrosion inhibitor actually contains. Section 1.2 identifies the use as corrosion and scale inhibitor for heating and cooling systems. Section 3.2 lists the declared mixture components as sodium nitrate (CAS 7631-99-4) at 1-5 percent and 1H-benzotriazole (CAS 95-14-7) at 1-3 percent. No glycol is declared, which is the point: glycol is an antifreeze or heat transfer fluid, not the corrosion inhibitor chemistry, so guidance describing central heating inhibitor as glycol based is wrong. Benzotriazole is the copper and brass inhibitor; nitrate protects ferrous metal and aluminium. Manufacturer Sentinel Performance Solutions Ltd, Daresbury Park, Warrington.

Stelrad
Manufacturer output tables for Stelrad's designer and vertical ranges, all quoted at delta T50 (75/65/20C). Vertical Ultra K2 at 1040mm front panel height gives 857 W at 470mm wide, 1071 W at 570mm and 1285 W at 670mm; at 1240mm height 999, 1249 and 1499 W; at 1840mm height 1476, 1845 and 2214 W; and at 2040mm height 1584, 1980 and 2376 W, which is the data behind swapping a long low radiator for a tall narrow one. Column style radiators are far weaker for their size: Concord Side Chrome at 500mm wide gives only 221 W at 830mm high, 297 W at 1130mm, 371 W at 1430mm and 448 W at 1730mm, and the Lecco at 1200 by 500mm gives just 200 W. Concord Side Concept at 500mm wide gives 374, 483 and 602 W at 830, 1130 and 1430mm high. Working pressure on the designer ranges is 4 bar. Stelrad states repeatedly that t50 is the UK industry standard and that a low temperature heat source needs the t40 or t30 outputs instead, applying the correction factors table in the brochure, which is the single most important caveat when sizing radiators for a heat pump.

Stelrad
Manufacturer technical data for a compact panel radiator range. Heated surface area runs 1.75, 2.82, 3.87, 4.58 and 5.24 m2 per metre on the lighter types and 3.51, 5.62, 7.74 and 9.15 m2 per metre on the double panel types. Weight is 8.16, 12.80, 17.45, 20.05 and 29.8 kg per metre on the lighter types and 16.8, 25.9, 35 and 40.53 kg per metre on the doubles, which is the number that decides the wall fixings on a stud partition. Wall to tap centre is 48mm on the single panel types and 62 to 73mm on the doubles. Bracket dimensions are tabulated for 300mm and 450mm heights at 400mm and 500 to 2000mm lengths. K1 long radiators can only be fixed in position B while P+ and K2 can be position A or B. Stelrad repeats that t50 (75/65/20C) is the UK industry standard output condition and that a low temperature heat source requires the t40 or t30 output tables instead.

Manufacturer dimension and capacity table for a high gain unvented cylinder, the type with an enlarged or external heat exchanger for faster reheat. Capacities are 90, 125, 150, 170, 200, 250, 300, 400 and 500 litres. Heights are 750, 880, 1060, 1200, 1150, 1490, 1780, 1590 and 1835 mm with diameters of 510 mm to 170 litres, 554 mm from 200 to 300 litres and 660 mm at 400 and 500 litres. Note the 554 mm shell here against the 580 mm shell on the same maker's standard Tempest Indirect at the same capacities, a 26 mm difference that can decide whether a cylinder fits an existing cupboard. Connection heights A to F are tabulated for every size, running from 170 mm up to 1590 mm.

Telford Group
Manufacturer dimension and capacity table for a stainless steel indirect unvented cylinder, the numbers needed to check a cylinder will physically fit. Capacities are 90, 125, 150, 170, 200, 250, 300, 400 and 500 litres. Heights are 750, 935, 1060, 1200, 1150, 1490, 1780, 1590 and 1835 mm and diameters step through 510 mm up to 200 litres, 580 mm to 300 litres and 660 mm at 400 and 500 litres. Every size is supplied with a 3 kW immersion heater as back-up. Connection heights A to F are tabulated for each capacity, from 170mm up to 1590mm, which is what determines whether existing pipework can be reused. Note the 200 litre unit is shorter than the 170 litre one because it steps up to the wider 580 mm shell, so a taller cupboard is not always needed for more storage.

Titon
Manufacturer specification for a compact whole house MVHR unit for smaller dwellings. Airflow is up to 60 l/s (217 m3/h) at 100 Pa. Specific fan power is down to 0.65 W per l/s, notably worse than the 0.43 W per l/s of the larger HRV4.25 in the same range, which is the trade-off for a smaller unit. It is IP32 rated with three volt free switch inputs and weighs 16 kg, against 28.5 kg for the large unit, the figure that decides whether it can go in a cupboard or needs a loft platform. Guarantee is 3 years UK. It is independently tested by the BRE.

Titon
Manufacturer specification for a whole house mechanical ventilation with heat recovery unit. Airflow is up to 158 l/s (568 m3/h) at 100 Pa, heat recovery efficiency is up to 91 per cent and specific fan power is down to 0.43 W per l/s. The unit is IP32 rated, weighs 28.5 kg and has three volt free switch inputs. Noise is quoted as dB(A) at 3 metres on both hemispherical and spherical measurement. Guarantee is 3 years in the UK. It has been independently tested by the BRE, which is what allows the figures to be used in a SAP calculation. The smaller HRV4 Q Plus in the same family reaches an SFP of 0.38 W per l/s at up to 91 per cent heat recovery.

Triton Showers
The manufacturer's own MCB sizing table for electric showers, which is the figure an electrician needs before a shower is upgraded. A 7 kW shower takes a 30 or 32 amp MCB, 7.5 kW takes 32 amp, 8 kW takes 40 amp, 8.5 kW takes 40 amp, 9.5 kW takes 40 or 45 amp and 10.5 kW takes 45 or 50 amp. This is why swapping an 8.5 kW unit for a 10.5 kW one is not a like for like change: the circuit protection and usually the cable have to be uprated too. Triton states that some units will keep working at reduced flow on a minimum running pressure of 0.5 bar at 8 litres per minute, but full flow performance needs more. Water connections are 15mm compression on the mains fed range and the T90xr pumped shower, while the T80si pumped shower uses a 15mm push fit inlet. Where mains pressure is insufficient a T450i single impeller pump can feed most electric showers, but not a 10.5 kW unit.

Vaillant
Manufacturer specification for the aroTHERM plus, available at 3.5, 5, 7, 10 and 12 kW. Quoted SCOP is up to 5.03. The unit uses the natural refrigerant R290 (propane) with a global warming potential of 3, reaching a flow temperature of up to 75C, which is what allows a like for like replacement onto existing radiators. Sound power is 51, 53 and 58 dB(A) across the casing sizes, and the sheet quotes a sound pressure level of less than 30 dB(A) at the stated planning distance. Product dimensions are 765 x 1100 x 450 mm for the smaller casing and 1565 x 1100 x 450 mm for the larger. Weight ready for operation is 114, 128 and 194 kg. Maximum rated current is 14.3, 15 and 23.3 A single phase, with 400V three phase available on the 10 and 12 kW only. IP rating is IP 15B. System operating pressure range is 0.5 to 2.5 bar. Refrigerant charge is 0.60, 0.90 and 1.30 kg, which matters because propane charge size drives the siting rules.

Vent-Axia
Manufacturer datasheet for a decentralised mechanical extract fan, with the noise against airflow table an extractor fan choice actually turns on. The 100mm unit has variable speed settings of 5-30 l/s on trickle and 6-35 l/s on boost, with a minimum noise level of 13 dB(A) at 3 metres. The 125mm unit runs 9-30 l/s trickle and 10-35 l/s boost with a minimum 12.9 dB(A) at 3 metres. The full sound tables show the 100mm fan at 13, 14, 17, 24 and 41 dB(A) as flow rises from 6 to 8 to 13 l/s and up to maximum, and the 125mm at 12, 14, 17, 19 and 36 dB(A) at 9, 13 and 15 l/s and up, so noise rises steeply near the top of the range and a fan run at trickle is close to inaudible. Specific fan power is as low as 0.12 W per l/s. Airflow is set in 1 l/s increments. Vent-Axia notes the larger 125mm spigot places almost no restriction on duct length and bends compared with a traditional 100mm axial fan, so fewer fans are needed for whole house ventilation, and that it improves the Dwelling Emission Rate. Supplied with a 7 year guarantee.

Viessmann
Manufacturer brochure with the technical data table for the Vitodens 100-W. Heat output at 80/60C runs 2.9-10.1, 2.9-17.5, 2.9-23.0 and 2.9-29.3 kW across the four sizes; at 50/30C the same units give 3.2-11.0, 3.2-19.0, 3.2-25.0 and 3.2-32.0 kW. The 2.9 kW minimum is the notable figure, a wide modulation range for a small property. Domestic hot water flow at a 35C continuous rise is 10, 12 and 14 l/min, or 13.3, 15.6 and 17.0 l/min measured at a 30K rise under EN 13203-1, which is why two manufacturers' flow rates are not comparable unless the delta T matches. Rated output for DHW is 27.3, 31.7 and 34.9 kW. Case dimensions are 700mm high by 400mm wide by 360mm deep, weight 33 kg, with a 60mm flue gas connection and 100mm ventilation air connection and an 8 litre expansion vessel. The Vitodens 111-W adds a 46 litre stainless steel charging cylinder. Guarantee is 5 years, extending to 7 or 10 years when fitted by a Viessmann trained installer.

Worcester Bosch
Manufacturer one-page specification for the Greenstar 4000 combi. Central heating output modulates from 3 kW up to 24 kW. Hot water flow rate at the tap at 35C delta T is 10.2 l/min on the 25 kW model and 12.3 l/min on the 30 kW model, so the model number describes hot water power, not radiator power. Guarantee is up to 8 years when installed by an accredited installer. Servicing clearance is 20mm from a removable cupboard door and 600mm from a fixed surface. This is the source for the point that a 30 kW combi does not put 30 kW into the radiators.

Wunda Group
Manufacturer figures for wet underfloor heating. Water underfloor heating runs at 35-45C flow against 60-80C for a radiator circuit, which is the reason it suits a heat pump without a temperature penalty. Wunda states wet underfloor heating costs about 60 per cent less to run than electric underfloor heating and is better suited to a larger room or area. On installation effort the manufacturer states 75 m2 could be laid over a weekend by a competent installer. The 35-45C figure is the number to quote whenever a note explains why underfloor heating and heat pumps are paired.
