Automated driveway gates are one of the most visible security and kerb-appeal upgrades you can make to a property. Done well, they add genuine value and convenience. Done badly — undersized motors, inadequate safety devices, or a gate that snags on the post — they become a constant source of frustration and a potential liability. This guide covers what you need to know before buying.
Gate Materials
The material choice determines long-term maintenance requirements as much as initial appearance.

Timber gates are the cheapest to buy but require the most upkeep. Untreated softwood rots within a few years; hardwood (iroko, oak, European redwood) lasts longer but still needs treatment every two to three years. Timber swells with moisture and can bind against the post or ground on automated gates — allow clearance in the specification.
Steel gates (mild steel or galvanised) balance cost, durability, and security. Powder coating protects against corrosion; chips should be touched up promptly. Steel is the most common material for automated gates because it machines precisely and welds cleanly for motor brackets and pivot points.
Aluminium gates are lightweight, rust-proof, and increasingly popular. They need almost no maintenance and are available in a wide range of RAL powder coat colours. Larger aluminium panels need thicker profiles or internal bracing to prevent flex, as the material is less stiff than steel in equivalent sections.
Wrought iron is the traditional prestige option. It lasts for generations but is heavy (relevant for motor sizing) and requires periodic repainting. Most gates marketed as ‘wrought iron’ are actually mild steel or cast iron — true hand-forged wrought iron is expensive and rare.

Swing gates operate on hinges or pivots and open inward or outward. The main constraint is the swing arc: the gate needs a swept area equal to its own width, and inward-opening gates need a level driveway to clear the ground through their arc. Sliding Gates
Sliding gates run laterally on a track, parallel to the fence line. They suit sites where there is no room for a swing arc — a steep driveway immediately inside the gate, or a shallow forecourt. They are stronger structurally and more resistant to forced entry (no hinge to lever), but cost more to install, require a clear run of space alongside the driveway equal to the gate width (plus 500–800mm for the operator and end stops), and need the track kept clear of debris and ice.

The standard mechanism is rack-and-pinion: a toothed rack welded to the gate base engages a motor-driven pinion to push the gate along the track. Reliable and handles gates up to 5–6m wide. Cantilever systems (gate suspended from posts, no ground track) suit areas where drainage or surface changes make a track impractical — more expensive but more reliable in exposed locations.
Safety Standards: BS EN 12453
All automated gates in the UK must comply with BS EN 12453: Safety in Use of Power Operated Pedestrian Doorsets and Gates, which sets limits on the impact force an automated gate can apply and specifies the safety measures required to prevent entrapment injuries.
The key requirements:
Force limits: an automated gate must not apply more than 400 N (newtons) of static force after the initial dynamic impact. This is measured at the leading edge of the gate.
Safety edges: pressure-sensitive strips on the leading edge that stop and reverse the gate on contact with an obstruction. Required wherever there is entrapment risk between the moving gate and a fixed structure.
Photocells (infrared beams): break-beam sensors across the gate opening that stop and reverse the gate if the beam is interrupted. Domestic installations should have beams at both vehicle height and pedestrian height.
Warning devices: automated gates should have a visible warning sign (conforming to BS EN 13241-1) advising that the gate is power operated. An audible or visual warning before the gate moves (such as a short beep or a flashing light) is best practice and increasingly expected.
UKCA marking: gate automation units sold in the UK must carry UKCA marking under the Machinery Directive equivalent. Reputable manufacturers’ products carry this already; be cautious of very cheap units that do not.
