Wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves have become a central feature of UK renovations over the past decade, combining visual warmth with genuine supplementary heating. But the regulatory landscape shifted significantly with the Ecodesign Regulations 2022, and homeowners in smoke-control areas face additional restrictions. Understanding the real difference between a wood burner and a multi-fuel stove — and which is right for your home — can save you significant money and future headaches.

Wood Burner vs Multi-Fuel Stove: What Is the Actual Difference?

Both types of stove heat a room by radiating heat from a firebox. The difference lies in the combustion chamber design:

Wood-burning stoves have a flat base or log grate and draw air from the front or sides. They are optimised for wood — logs sit on the base and burn slowly with a controlled air supply. Running coal or smokeless fuel in a wood burner damages the grate and base (coal burns hotter and the ash is more corrosive).

Multi-fuel stoves have a raised riddling grate (a cast-iron grate that can be shaken to drop ash into a bottom chamber) and a primary air supply from below the grate. This allows both wood and approved solid fuels — including smokeless coal briquettes, anthracite, and compressed fuel logs — to burn efficiently.

Ecodesign and Smoke Control Areas

Since January 2022, all new stoves sold in the UK must meet Ecodesign 2022 emissions limits — reducing particulate matter (PM 2.5) by at least 60% compared to older stoves. This applies to both wood burners and multi-fuel stoves.

If you live in a smoke-control area (most UK cities and many towns are designated — check with your local council), you must use a DEFRA-exempt stove. DEFRA exemptions are only granted to models that have passed specific clean-burn tests. In a smoke-control area:

  • A DEFRA-exempt wood burner can burn dry wood (moisture content ≤ 20%).

Smokeless coal has a significantly higher calorific value per kg but costs more per kWh than seasoned wood bought by the tonne. Chimney Requirements

All stoves require a dedicated flue — a shared flue with another appliance is not permitted. Building Regs Part J requires:

  • Internal diameter ≥ 150 mm for stoves up to 20 kW (most residential stoves).
  • Flue height ≥ 4.5 m above the stove outlet for natural draught.
  • Liner material rated to temperature class T400 (flexible stainless liner, grade 316 or 904L for multi-fuel with coal use).

A HETAS-registered installer will assess the chimney, advise on the liner specification, and issue a HETAS certificate of installation — required by your insurer and necessary for any future property sale.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose a wood burner if:

  • You have access to cheap or free seasoned logs.
  • You are not in a smoke-control area (or will only use DEFRA-exempt dry wood anyway).
  • You prefer maximum radiated heat output from wood.

Choose a multi-fuel stove if:

  • You want the flexibility to use smokeless fuel during cold spells or when wood is unavailable.
  • You have neighbours or chimney positioning issues that mean overnight burns on a hot fuel are useful.
  • Your local area has easy access to smokeless briquettes at a reasonable price.

Either way, buy the largest stove your room can sensibly accommodate — undersized stoves are run flat-out (inefficient and dirty) while the right-sized stove can be throttled back for cleaner, more economical combustion. A rule of thumb: 1 kW per 14 m³ of room volume for a well-insulated modern home; 1 kW per 10 m³ for older, draughtier properties.
