The short answer: for structural materials bought in volume, a builders’ merchant is usually cheaper than a DIY store, mainly through trade-account and bulk pricing. But price is not the only variable. Range, convenience, stock depth, opening hours, delivery options and product quality all differ significantly between the two channels. Understanding when to use which saves both money and frustration.
How the Pricing Models Differ
Builders’ merchants buy direct from manufacturers in bulk and sell primarily to tradespeople who buy repeatedly. Their pricing is structured around volume: the more you buy, and the better your account relationship, the lower the unit price. DIY retailers carry a consumer margin: they stock a narrower range in smaller pack sizes, price for the casual weekend buyer and carry the overhead of retail store environments, extended opening hours and consumer returns desks. That overhead is embedded in the shelf price.
The result is a pricing gap on many structural lines, although on some everyday items the shelf prices are now close.
| Material | Builders’ Merchant (trade/cash) | B&Q / Wickes Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Dense concrete blocks (7.3 N, 100 mm) per block | £2.50–£2.95 | £2.40–£2.70 |
| C24 treated timber 47×100 mm per m | £3.95–£4.90 | £4.05–£7.54 |
| 100 mm PIR insulation board per m² | £14–£181 | £18–£26 |
| 12.5 mm plasterboard per sheet | £10–£12 | £13–£14 |
| 25 kg general purpose cement per bag | £6–£9 | £7.50–£9 |
| 110 mm underground drainage pipe per m | £4–£7 | £5–£8 |
| Heavy duty DPC (Hyload-type), 225 mm wide, per m | about £1.45 | about £2.60 |
Indicative 2026 UK figures, anchored on September 2026 shelf prices including VAT (see below). Trade account prices sit at the lower end of the merchant range. DIY store prices vary by promotion, and some lines on DIY store websites come from marketplace sellers.
In September 2026 the shelf prices on blocks were close; on timber the comparison depended on the grade. Travis Perkins listed a 100 mm solid dense 7.3 N block at £2.93 each including VAT, or £2.54 with a trade account.2 Wickes listed a 100 mm Tarmac 7.3 N dense block at £2.40, reduced from £2.70.3 Travis Perkins listed a 2.4 m length of 47×100 mm regularised treated C24 at £11.69 including VAT, with 14% off for trade account holders.4 B&Q’s website listed ten 2.4 m lengths of 47×100 mm sawn treated timber graded C16/C24, sold by a marketplace seller, for £97.20, about £4.05 per metre.5 The closest match to the Travis Perkins length, a bundle of ten 2.4 m lengths of 47×100 mm regularised treated C24 from another marketplace seller on B&Q’s website, was £180.92, about £18.09 a length or £7.54 per metre.6 On blocks the merchant’s advantage comes mainly from the trade account and from bulk pricing, while on graded C24 timber the merchant was cheaper even at shelf price.
The other rows rest on the same kind of check. Selco listed a 100 mm IKO Enertherm PIR board (2.88 m²) at £49.50 including VAT, about £17.20 per m², and Wickes listed a 100 mm Kingspan TP10 board at £55, about £19.10 per m².78 Selco listed a standard 12.5 mm Siniat plasterboard sheet at £12.06 including VAT, and Wickes listed a 12.5 mm Knauf sheet at £13.40.910 Selco listed a 25 kg bag of Rugby Premium cement at £6.76 including VAT, and B&Q listed a 25 kg bag of Blue Circle General Purpose cement at £7.50.1112 Builder Depot listed a 3 m length of 110 mm FloPlast underground pipe at £14.39 including VAT, £4.80 per metre, and Wickes listed a 3 m FloPlast underground drainage pipe at £16, £5.33 per metre.1314 A 20 m roll of 225 mm IKO Hyload Trade DPC was £28.88 including VAT at Builder Depot, about £1.44 per metre, while a 20 m roll of 225 mm Hyload Original was £52 from a marketplace seller on B&Q’s website, about £2.60 per metre.1516
On individual items the saving may seem modest. Over a full renovation or extension, where materials spend runs to tens of thousands of pounds, buying from the merchant consistently compounds into a meaningful saving.
Where DIY Stores Are Genuinely Better
DIY stores have real advantages in specific situations:
Small quantities without minimum packs. If you need two sheets of plywood or three bags of cement, a DIY store sells individual units without pressing you toward a full pack or pallet. Some merchants apply minimum quantities, particularly for delivery, and their best prices on bagged goods are usually reserved for full pallets.
Consumer-grade fittings and finishes. Door handles, paint, light switches, socket covers, silicone sealant, for these, DIY stores offer a wider range of retail-quality products in finish choices that suit domestic interiors. Builders’ merchants stock trade-grade equivalents that prioritise function over aesthetics.
Weekend and evening availability. Many builders’ merchant branches close around 17:00 on weekdays, open for a shorter day on Saturday and do not trade on Sunday. Large DIY stores typically stay open into the evening on weekdays and trade on Sunday, although in England and Wales a large shop may open for only six continuous hours on a Sunday, between 10:00 and 18:00.17 For emergency purchases on a weekend project, the DIY store may be your only option.
Click-and-collect and online ordering. The major DIY chains have mature e-commerce platforms. You can order online at midnight and collect the next morning. Many builders’ merchant branches are catching up, but branch stock visibility online is less reliable.
Returns. Consumer retailer returns policies are typically more flexible, often allowing 30 days or more for unused goods, whereas a merchant may refuse returns on cut timber or opened bags. For goods bought online or by phone, the Consumer Contracts Regulations also give a consumer 14 days from delivery to cancel, except for goods made or cut to the buyer’s specification.18
Where Builders’ Merchants Win
Structural and specification-grade materials. C24 graded timber, 7.3 N and 10.4 N concrete blocks, structural plywood to BS EN 636, Type 1 MOT aggregate, sulfate-resisting cement: these products exist at builders’ merchants as a matter of course.19 They may be absent from or mislabelled at DIY stores.
Bulk pricing. The more you buy, the more you save. A full pack of timber, a full pallet of blocks or a full lorry of insulation will be priced by the merchant at a rate no DIY store can match.
Trade knowledge at the counter. Counter staff at a well-run builders’ merchant will know the relevant British Standard for the job, the right product for a given substrate and what is compatible with what. This is not universal, branch quality varies considerably, but an experienced merchant salesperson can prevent specification errors that cost money to fix.
Delivery capability. Most builders’ merchants operate delivery fleets with tail-lift, flatbed or HIAB crane-lorry options for heavy or awkward materials. DIY store delivery tends to be more limited and slower for bulk goods.
Project accounts. If you are running a medium or large project, a merchant will open a named account, provide a dedicated point of contact and track your spend. The DIY chains’ trade schemes offer discounts, but rarely an equivalent named-contact relationship for a residential project.
The Hybrid Approach
Most experienced renovators and self-builders use both channels:
- Merchants for structural materials, insulation, drainage, roofing, bulk timber, aggregates and any product requiring a specific structural or fire rating
- DIY stores for small supplementary quantities, consumer finishes, fixings in small packs, paint, decorative materials and emergency weekend top-ups
Screwfix and Toolstation occupy a useful middle ground: trade-oriented pricing, small-quantity sales, excellent online availability and same-day branch collection. They carry only a limited range of heavy building materials but are strong on fixings, tools, electrical accessories and plumbing fittings at prices that are often as competitive as a merchant’s counter.
The Specification Risk
One underappreciated reason to use a builders’ merchant for structural materials: what you buy is what it says it is. A bag of cement from a merchant’s yard is a known CEM I or CEM II product with a declared strength class. Timber is graded. Blocks carry their compressive strength designation.
At some DIY stores, the same-looking product may be an ungraded or consumer-grade variant that is not suitable for structural use. This matters most for:
- Timber used in roofs, floors or stud walls (normally C16 or C24, strength graded to BS EN 14081-1 and designed to Eurocode 5)20
- Concrete blocks used in foundations or load-bearing walls (strength class must be specified)
- Cement used in structural mixes (strength class must be confirmed)
The Building Regulations require materials that are appropriate for the circumstances in which they are used.21 Using the wrong specification material will not always fail immediately, but it can cause problems during Building Regulations inspection and may create liability issues if the work is later sold or let.
Summary
Choose a builders’ merchant when you need structural materials, large quantities, specification-grade products or trade pricing on a significant spend. Use a DIY store for convenience, small quantities, consumer finishes and weekend access. For fixings, electrical accessories and plumbing fittings in modest quantities, compare Screwfix and Toolstation online before committing to either channel.
