Wiring a ceiling rose is a common domestic electrical task, but it must be approached carefully. Under Part P of the Building Regulations, work on lighting circuits in a dwelling must be carried out by a competent person. A competent DIYer can legally do this work in England and Wales — but must be confident with electrical work and understand the wiring before starting.
This guide covers the two wiring methods used in UK homes, how to identify what you have, and how to connect everything correctly.
Always isolate the circuit at the consumer unit and verify with a voltage tester before touching any wires. Never assume a circuit is dead.
Understanding UK Wiring Colours
UK wiring has used two colour schemes. Knowing which you have matters before you start.

Many homes have a mixture. If you find old-colour wiring, the cables are still serviceable but should be sleeved with correct-colour sleeving at any new connections. Do not re-colour wires with paint or marker — use proprietary insulating sleeving.
The Two Wiring Methods
Loop-In Wiring
The most common method in UK homes built after about 1960. All connections happen at the ceiling rose — there are no junction boxes in the ceiling void. Multiple cables enter the rose:
- Feed cable from the consumer unit (or from the previous rose)
- Switch cable down to the light switch and back
- Continuation cable (if more roses follow in the circuit)
The rose has three terminal blocks:
- Live (L) — usually marked with a central cluster of multiple brown/red wires
- Neutral (N) — the outer neutral block(s); multiple blue/black wires
- Earth — all earth wires connected here and to the rose body if it is metal
The switch cable is distinctive: it uses a two-core cable but both conductors function as live wires (switch live and switched live). The blue/black conductor in a switch cable should be sleeved brown or red to indicate it is live.
Junction Box Wiring (older method)
In older properties, a junction box hidden in the ceiling void distributes connections, with one cable running to the rose. In this case, the rose has fewer cables — often just one feed and one to the switch. The junction box must remain accessible (typically via a hatch or removable ceiling panel).
Tools and Equipment
- Voltage tester (non-contact or socket tester — essential)
- Flathead and crosshead screwdrivers
- Wire strippers
- Terminal connector blocks (if the rose doesn’t have enough terminals)
- Sleeving for any old wiring
- Electrical tape
- Torch or head torch
Step-by-Step: Replacing a Ceiling Rose (Loop-In)
1. Isolate the Circuit
Turn off the relevant circuit breaker at the consumer unit. Use a non-contact voltage tester to verify the circuit is dead at the ceiling rose — test every wire before touching anything. Tell others in the household not to restore power.
2. Remove the Old Rose
Unscrew the rose cover (usually one central screw). Photograph the existing wiring before disconnecting anything — this is your reference if you get confused. Note which wires are in which terminals.
Slacken the terminal screws and withdraw each wire. If the wires are very short, use terminal connectors to extend them.
3. Mount the New Rose
Thread the cables through the hole in the new rose base. Fix the base to the ceiling joist or plasterboard fixing (a ceiling rose fitting must be supported to carry the weight of the pendant and bulb; use a plasterboard anchor rated for the load if there is no joist above).
4. Connect the Wires
Loop-in rose — typical connection:
- All brown (live) and the sleeved-brown blue (switch return) connect to the live (central) terminal
- All blue/black neutral wires connect to the neutral terminal(s)
- The single blue/black switch wire (sleeved brown) comes from the switch cable and connects to the switched live terminal — this is the wire that connects to the lamp holder
- All earths connect to the earth terminal; sleeve any bare earths with green/yellow sleeving
If in doubt about which cable is which: the switch cable typically runs in a different direction to the feed cables, and has only two conductors.
5. Connect the Pendant or Fitting
Connect the flex from the pendant lamp holder:
- Brown (live) to the switched live terminal on the rose
- Blue (neutral) to the neutral terminal
- Green/yellow (earth) to earth, if the fitting has an earth connection
6. Test
Without closing up the rose, restore power at the consumer unit and test the switch. Turn the circuit off again before closing the rose cover. Give a final tug on each wire to check none are loose.
Wiring a Ceiling Rose to a Dimmer Switch
Standard dimmer switches are compatible with LED bulbs only if the bulb is marked “dimmable.” Non-dimmable LEDs will flicker or hum on a dimmer. The wiring at the rose is the same; the change is at the switch only.
When to Call an Electrician
Call a Part P registered electrician if:
- You find more than three cables and cannot work out which is which
- There is any sign of overheating, scorching, or melted insulation in the existing rose
- The wiring is very old (rubber-insulated, cloth-covered, or with a third red/black wire — this is likely 1960s or earlier wiring and should be assessed by an electrician)
- You want to add a new ceiling rose where there is not currently one — this involves extending the circuit and is more complex
An electrician will typically charge £60–£120 for a ceiling rose replacement, or £100–£200 if running a new switch cable is involved. Day rates across the UK in 2026 run £200–£350.
Building Regulations
Replacing a like-for-like ceiling rose is notifiable work under Part P in England and Wales if done by a non-registered person — you must notify the local authority building control department. In practice, most registered electricians handle notification automatically. In Scotland, electrical work is covered under Section 4 of the Technical Handbooks.
If you are competent and carry out the work yourself, you can self-certify and notify — but many homeowners prefer to use a registered electrician for certificate purposes, particularly before a property sale.
