A wired home network is one of the most underrated renovation upgrades. Wi-Fi is convenient but lossy — walls, microwave ovens, and neighbouring networks all degrade the signal. A properly cabled Ethernet network gives you rock-solid bandwidth to TVs, gaming consoles, home offices, and network-attached storage, and it lasts the lifetime of the building if done with quality cable and terminations.

How Much Do Data Points Cost to Install?

These prices include a qualified electrician (or network installer) supplying and running the cable, terminating at a data point faceplate, and testing with a cable tester. They do not include broadband router upgrades, switches, or Wi-Fi access points.
Cable Types: What to Specify
The most important decision is cable category. In 2026, the realistic choices for UK residential are Cat 6 and Cat 6A.

Cat 5e is legacy and not worth specifying — the price difference to Cat 6 is minimal and the headroom is significantly less.
Cat 6 is the default for retrofitting existing homes. It handles Gigabit Ethernet without issue and fits through standard 20 mm conduit. For a typical home with a 1 Gbps broadband connection, Cat 6 is more than adequate.
Cat 6A is worth the premium in new builds or full rewires where cables are being run in conduit anyway. The thicker cable (often 7–9 mm) is harder to route through tight bends, but the 10 Gbps capacity future-proofs the installation for 15–20 years.
Cable standard: Specify S/FTP (foil-screened, individually shielded pair) cable for best interference rejection, particularly if cables run parallel to mains wiring. Unshielded UTP is acceptable in most homes but requires separation of at least 50 mm from mains cabling under BS 7671 (18th Edition).
Where to Run Cables
Central Distribution Point
Every data network works best with a star topology — all cables radiate from a central patch panel to each room. Choose a location with:
- Proximity to the incoming broadband entry point (master socket location).
- Ventilation — a network cabinet in a small closed cupboard will overheat switches.
- Mains power access (for switch, router, NAS).
Common locations: hallway cupboard under stairs, loft, utility room.
Cable Routing Options
Surface trunking (PVC dado trunking) is the fastest retrofit option. White 50 × 25 mm PVC trunking runs along skirting boards or dado height and looks acceptable in utility spaces. It is not suitable for rooms where aesthetics matter.
Chased into solid walls gives a flush finish but adds significant cost — expect 1–2 hours of chasing, patching, and making good per cable run.
Through stud walls and ceiling voids is usually the most cost-effective concealed method. Cables drop from the loft or rise from under floors and emerge at back-box positions. Requires a stud finder and is much easier during a renovation than in a fully decorated home.
In conduit — always run cables inside 20 mm (Cat 6) or 25 mm (Cat 6A) conduit if you are chasing into solid walls or running in floor screeds. This allows cable replacement without re-chasing — a 10-year investment that always pays off.
Termination and Testing
Data points terminate in RJ45 keystones mounted in standard UK single or double gang back-boxes. Specify Cat 6-rated keystones and patch panels — mixing cable and connector categories defeats the purpose of upgrading.
A basic cable test (wiremap test) confirms correct pin-out and no shorts. A full qualification test (performed with a Fluke DSX or similar certifier) certifies each run to the Cat 6 or 6A standard and is worth requesting for new builds or if you are paying for structured cabling.
Regulatory Considerations
Data cabling is classified as low-voltage signal wiring and does not itself need to be designed or signed off by a qualified electrician under Part P of the Building Regulations. However:
- Any new mains power sockets added for a network cabinet do fall under Part P and must be done by a qualified electrician or notified to building control.
- Cables passing through compartment walls (e.g. party walls, floors between flats) must be fire-stopped — stuff the conduit with intumescent putty or fit a proprietary firestop collar.
- In loft spaces near roof insulation, use cables rated for elevated temperatures (typically specified in the cable data sheet).
Wi-Fi Access Points vs More Data Points
For a modern home, the best approach is often a hybrid: wired Ethernet to each floor, with a ceiling-mounted Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 access point on each level powered via PoE (Power over Ethernet) from the central switch. This gives you reliable wired connections where you need them and consistent Wi-Fi coverage throughout. DIY vs Professional
Terminating Cat 6 keystones is a learnable skill — a punch-down tool costs £8–£15 and YouTube has excellent tutorials. The risks are:

- Excessive untwisting at termination — degrades Cat 6 performance; keep untwisted length under 13 mm.

Running cable through building fabric, particularly chasing solid walls or penetrating firewalls, is better left to a professional unless you have renovation experience. The cable itself is cheap — the making-good work after a bad chase is not.
