The 1930s semi-detached is one of the most common housing types in the UK. Built in vast numbers between the wars on the expanding suburban fringes of every major city, these homes are characterised by bay windows, hanging tiles or pebbledash, side passages, and relatively generous plot sizes by later standards. They are also solidly built — more so than many post-war equivalents — but after 90+ years they carry a predictable set of problems that any buyer or renovator should understand before starting work.
